Withholding is not what you owe

Bonuses, sign-on and RSU vests are “supplemental wages”. Employers usually withhold a flat 22% federal (37% on supplemental pay above $1M in a year) and, in some states, a flat state rate. If your real marginal rate is higher, you owe the difference at filing time.

State: No flat supplemental rate modelled for this state.

Year 1. Withholding on base salary is approximated as the tax on base alone; your W-4 and payroll system may differ. Spouse income is ignored here.

How this is calculated

  • Each “year” is an employment year treated as one tax year, using 2026 tax law for all four years. Brackets are not inflation-adjusted for later years, and salary is held flat.
  • RSUs are taxed as ordinary wages when they vest, at the value on the vest date (initial grant price × assumed growth). Gains or losses after vesting are not modelled.
  • ESPP shares are assumed sold on the purchase date (a disqualifying disposition): the discount is ordinary income, not subject to Social Security or Medicare tax.
  • The 401(k) contribution is pre-tax for federal and state income tax but still subject to Social Security and Medicare. Roth 401(k) is not modelled.
  • Standard deduction unless your itemized amounts are larger. No credits (child tax credit etc.), no other income, no AMT.
  • Bonus is paid in full in year 1 (some employers prorate the first year). Refreshers and bonuses are targets, not promises.
  • Local taxes: New York City resident tax and Portland-area taxes where you pick them. Other city or county taxes (e.g. some Ohio or Pennsylvania localities) are not included.

California: 2026 brackets not published yet (FTB usually posts them in December); 2025 schedule used.

Washington: No income tax on wages. WA’s capital gains tax applies to long-term gains on stock you sell, not to RSU vesting income. Some workers (e.g. certain temporary-visa holders) may qualify for a WA Cares exemption: check wacaresfund.wa.gov.

What we could not verify
  • California 2026 tax brackets are not published yet; 2025 FTB schedules are used (EDD’s 2026 withholding tables use the same bracket edges).
  • New Jersey has not published a 2026 rate schedule; the 2025 schedule (unchanged since 2020) is used.
  • Colorado’s 2026 income tax rate: 4.40% is the 2026 withholding rate; whether a TABOR refund mechanism lowers the 2026 rate is not known yet.
  • North Carolina’s 2026 married-joint standard deduction ($25,500) is assumed unchanged; only the single amount was confirmed for 2026.
  • Massachusetts: the personal exemption page is undated, and the $2,000 deduction for Social Security / Medicare contributions is applied from Form 1 rules we could not re-check on mass.gov (the site blocked automated access).
  • Illinois, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Oregon, Colorado and Washington: no flat supplemental withholding rate was found, so the withholding comparison covers federal only for these states.
  • Oregon’s 2026 brackets and standard deduction come from the 2026 withholding formulas, not final return instructions.
  • ESPP: plans differ (offering length, purchase caps, holding rules). The model assumes two 6-month offerings and immediate sale.
